Skinpen Microneedling in Miami
Collagen-Boosting Skin Renewal at Lumea Med Spa
SkinPen microneedling has changed how we treat texture, scars and early wrinkles because it works with skin biology instead of trying to overpower it.
What Makes SkinPen Microneedling Different?
SkinPen microneedling has changed how we treat texture, scars and early wrinkles because it works with skin biology instead of trying to overpower it. SkinPen is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device for acne scars. It uses tiny, precise needles to create controlled micro-channels in skin, which triggers a natural healing cascade.
At Lumea Med Spa in Miami, we use SkinPen to safely stimulate collagen and elastin with minimal downtime. Many of our clients see smoother, firmer and more even-toned skin in a series of treatments, without looking overdone or “worked on.”
How SkinPen Microneedling Works (In Simple Terms)
During SkinPen microneedling, a pen-like device glides across treated areas. Very fine needles create micro-injuries at a controlled depth. Skin reads those micro-injuries as a signal to repair and rebuild.
Here is what happens beneath the surface:
Phase 1: Inflammation
Skin responds immediately by increasing blood flow and immune activity. You see mild redness and warmth for a short time.
Phase 2: Proliferation
Fibroblasts (collagen-building cells) move into action. New collagen and elastin start forming around those micro-channels.
Phase 3: Remodeling
Over weeks, collagen fibers organize and tighten. Skin texture looks smoother, scars soften and fine lines appear less visible.
Because SkinPen creates thousands of micro-channels in a uniform pattern, results look even and natural instead of patchy.
Skin Concerns We Treat With SkinPen Microneedling
We usually recommend SkinPen microneedling when someone wants to improve texture or tone without aggressive lasers or long recovery.
Common concerns include:
- Acne scars
- Enlarged pores
- Early fine lines and wrinkles
- Mild skin laxity
- Rough or uneven texture
- Dullness or “tired-looking” skin
- Sun damage and mild pigmentation irregularities
- Stretch marks (on body areas)
In our Miami practice, we see excellent results pairing SkinPen with medical-grade skincare and sun protection. That combination helps maintain gains and protect your new collagen.
Why We Choose SkinPen at Lumea Med Spa
Not all microneedling devices are equal. We chose SkinPen for specific reasons that matter for safety and results.
Key advantages of Skinpen:
- FDA-cleared for facial acne scars in adults
- Single-use, sterile needle cartridges to reduce infection risk
- Adjustable needle depth for precision on different areas
- Suitable for all Fitzpatrick skin types (including darker skin tones)
- Minimal downtime compared to many laser treatments
We also like consistency. With SkinPen, we can dial in the exact depth and speed based on skin thickness, scarring pattern and sensitivity. That level of control allows us to treat delicate areas like around the eyes more conservatively while still working more deeply where scars or stretch marks need it.
Who Is a Good Candidate for SkinPen Microneedling?
Most healthy adults with realistic expectations are candidates. SkinPen works especially well for people who:
- Want smoother texture and smaller-looking pores
- Have acne scars that still show through makeup
- Notice early fine lines and mild laxity
- Prefer a gradual, natural improvement instead of a sudden dramatic change
You may not be a candidate if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have active skin infections, open wounds or cold sores in treated areas
- Have uncontrolled acne or inflammatory skin disease in the area
- Have a history of keloid scarring
- Are taking certain medications that affect healing (we review this in consultation)
During your consultation, we take a full history, examine skin up close and build a plan. Sometimes we start with calming or pigment-balancing skincare before the first microneedling session, particularly in melanin-rich skin.
What to Expect During a SkinPen Microneedling Session
Step 1: Consultation and Skin Assessment
We start with a conversation. We talk through your goals, medical history, any previous treatments and current skincare. We also discuss whether SkinPen alone is ideal or whether we should combine it with other services over time.
Step 2: Numbing and Preparation
Before treatment, we cleanse skin thoroughly. Then we apply a topical numbing cream and allow it to sit for about 20–30 minutes. That step makes the treatment much more comfortable.
Step 3: The Microneedling Procedure
Once skin is numb, we apply a glide serum and begin with the SkinPen device. You may feel a buzzing or scratching sensation. Most clients describe it as tolerable, especially on the cheeks and forehead. Around the nose and upper lip can feel more intense, but still manageable.
A full-face session usually takes 30–45 minutes. If we treat the neck, chest or stretch marks on the body, it can take a bit longer.
Step 4: Immediate Aftercare
Right after treatment, skin usually looks pink to red, similar to a sunburn. You may feel warm or tight. We apply soothing products specifically chosen for post-procedure skin.
We send you home with clear aftercare instructions. For the first 24–48 hours we recommend:
- Avoiding makeup
- Avoiding sweaty workouts, saunas and hot yoga
- Protecting skin strictly from the sun
- Using only the products we approve for that window
SkinPen Microneedling Results: What Our Clients Commonly Notice
Within the first week, redness fades and many people notice a fresher, more even surface.
Over the next several weeks, we often see:
- Softer-looking acne scars
- Smoother texture where pores looked enlarged
- Subtle lift and firmness in treated areas
- Fine lines appearing less etched-in
- More even, radiant tone
One of our favorite types of feedback is when someone tells us a co-worker commented on how “rested” they look but could not pinpoint why. That is the kind of natural result we aim for.
How Many SkinPen Sessions Will You Need?
Collagen remodeling is not instant. Most people see some glow and smoother texture within a week, but the real structural improvements evolve over 3–6 months as collagen matures.
Typical treatment plans:
Acne scars:
3–6 sessions
spaced about 4–6 weeks apart
Fine lines, pores and texture:
3–4 sessions
spaced 4 weeks apart
Stretch marks:
4–6+ sessions
depending on severity
We reassess after each visit. Some clients come back once or twice per year for maintenance sessions to keep collagen support strong, especially in Miami where sun exposure is a constant factor.
SkinPen Safety, Side Effects and Downtime
When a trained medical provider uses SkinPen with proper protocols, risks stay low. Expected short-term effects include:
- Redness and mild swelling for 24–72 hours
- Slight roughness or dryness while skin renews
- Mild tightness or sensitivity, especially to heat
Less common risks (which we work deliberately to avoid) include:
- Infection if aftercare is not followed
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in sensitive or darker skin types
- Flaring of conditions like cold sores if not pre-treated
To reduce those risks, we screen carefully, prep skin properly, use sterile single-use cartridges and guide you through aftercare step by step.
Maximizing Your SkinPen Results
To get the best possible outcome from each SkinPen microneedling session, we focus on a few core strategies:

Sun protection
Daily broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable in Miami. Fresh collagen is vulnerable to UV damage.

Supportive skincare
We often recommend gentle cleansers, hydrating serums, barrier-repair moisturizers and specific actives between sessions. Harsh scrubs and unvetted actives can slow progress.

Healthy habits
Adequate sleep, hydration and not smoking help collagen formation. Even small improvements in lifestyle can enhance your results.
Over time, many clients build a broader plan with us that might include injectables, peels or laser treatments at the right stage. SkinPen often forms the foundation because it directly supports skin structure.
SkinPen vs At-Home Dermarollers
We often get asked about doing “microneedling” at home. Professional SkinPen microneedling and at-home rollers are not comparable.
Key differences:
- Precision and depth: SkinPen reaches controlled depths that home devices cannot safely achieve.
- Sterility: Professional devices use medical-grade, disposable cartridges. Home rollers are difficult to disinfect fully.
- Technique: Trained providers understand anatomy, scar patterns and safe parameters for each skin type.
We strongly recommend against using deep at-home dermarollers on the face. Infection, scarring and pigment changes are real risks. If you want to support your in-office treatment at home, we prefer you use topical products we recommend rather than needles.
